Peer Review
The Journal of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence publishes original research articles. Every submission is reviewed as follows.
Initial screening
The Editor-in-Chief or a managing editor checks that a submission is within the journal's scope, is original and not under consideration elsewhere, and meets basic standards of presentation. Submissions that do not are returned to the authors without review.
Handling editor
Each submission that passes screening is assigned to a member of the Editorial Board as handling editor, chosen for expertise in the subject of the paper. The handling editor is responsible for the paper from that point to the final decision.
Double-blind review
Reviewing is double-blind: referees do not see the authors' names or affiliations, and authors are not told who the referees are. Authors are asked to prepare an anonymised version of the manuscript for this purpose. The handling editor determines the number of referees for each paper, normally two; each referee receives the manuscript and submits a written report with a recommendation.
Decision
On the basis of the reports, the handling editor decides: accept, minor revision, major revision, or reject. The decision is final. Authors receive the decision together with the referees' reports. A revised manuscript is accompanied by a response to the referees and may be sent back to the same referees.
Conflicts of interest
Editors do not handle papers by authors from their own institution, by recent collaborators or students, or in which they have any other interest. A referee with a conflict declines the invitation. Papers by members of the Editorial Board are handled by another editor, and the author has no access to the process.
Confidentiality
Manuscripts under review are confidential. Referees and editors do not share, discuss, or use their content.
Time
The journal aims to reach a first decision within three months of submission.
